  1. About Us

Our Team

From the Founder & Executive Director

Why we began.

Black Trans Alliance was founded in 2020 — in the middle of a pandemic that pulled the ground out from under everyone, and hit those already pushed to the margins the hardest. As the world locked down, Black trans and non-binary people were losing what little visibility and support they had. Conversations about race were everywhere; conversations that held Black and trans together were almost nowhere.

That gap was impossible to ignore. Allyship can't only be a hashtag in a moment of outrage — it has to mean stepping up, with real support and commitment, for a community already carrying more than its share. So we built a space centred on Black trans and non-binary people: to support, to protect, and to amplify.

“You never completely have your rights, one person, until you all have your rights.”

Marsha P. Johnson

None of this happens alone. We are a queer and trans-led organisation, carried by a small, dedicated team of volunteers who give their time, skills and heart because they believe Black trans lives matter every single day. The work is theirs as much as anyone's, and we're endlessly grateful for it.

This work has always belonged to the community it serves. Our job is to keep building toward that — and to make room for the Black trans and non-binary leadership the movement deserves.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has submitted an updated services Code of Practice to Parliament. This is the first major overhaul of the legally binding guidance since 2011, and it is now facing a 40-day parliamentary review before becoming law. For Black trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse communities, this update reshapes how UK service providers must handle discrimination and inclusion across four key areas
