Legal Support

Legal Support

Know your rights.

Navigating life as a visible gender minority means confronting systems that were not built for you. Justice can feel out of reach. Your rights have allies too — this page exists to help you find them.

Whether you need help with discrimination, healthcare access, name and document changes, workplace issues, housing, family law, hate crime, or immigration — the resources below are a starting point.

An honest note
We are not legal eagles.

Black Trans Alliance does not provide legal advice or representation. What we do is signpost — pointing you towards the trans-specific legal services run by people qualified to help. We can also support you in finding the right service, with our volunteer legal team of trans allies.

What legal help can cover

Common areas where Black trans and non-binary people need legal support in the UK:

  • Discrimination in workplaces, housing, services, or education
  • Name and document changes — deed poll, passport, NHS records, gender recognition
  • Healthcare access — gender clinic refusals, GP discrimination, refused treatment
  • Hate crime — transphobic, racist, or compounded incidents and how to report them
  • Asylum and immigration — LGBTQ+-specific asylum claims and trans-related immigration support
  • Family law — parenting, partnerships, civil partnerships, divorce
  • Workplace — harassment, unfair dismissal, transition at work
