This week, the trial officially began for the two teenagers accused of murdering 16-year-old Brianna Ghey. It is impossible to find words to describe the abhorrent behavior that sparked this innocent young trans girl's violent death. How could anyone snuff out her bright life, overflowing as it was with joy and promise? Brianna had so much yet to experience, discover, and offer this world.

No outcome can possibly ease the agony of Brianna’s loved ones, who have lost a treasured daughter, granddaughter and sister. Yet we hope deeply that justice is served in her name. More broadly, Brianna’s murder highlights the disturbing reality that trans individuals,  are frequent targets of horrific brutality rooted in transphobia. This must end.

As Brianna's case continues, let us honour her memory by affirming that trans rights are human rights. Let us advocate tirelessly for a society where trans youth can feel safe, supported, and empowered to shine. Though we cannot bring Brianna back, we can carry her radiant spirit forward into a more just future.

We stand with Brianna’s family and friends at this difficult time. We #SayHerName - Brianna Ghey - and recommit to building a country where no one suffers her unjust fate again.
